Research Direction:
1. Apple germplasm resource collection and evaluation
2. Apple cultivar and rootstock breeding and industrial demonstration
3. Genetic mapping and functional identification of key genes responsible for apple important traits
4. Research and innovation of breeding technologies
International Cooperation:
Long-term cooperation relationships have been built between the apple breeding group with The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited (PFR) and International Fruit Obtention (IFO) to carry out research on cultivar evaluation and hi-tech breeding system development.
Representative Achievements:
1. Cultivation and application of new apple cultivars
Representative cultivars released by the group including Huashuo, Huarui, Huaxing, Hongzhenzhu, Hongcuibao and Jinxiuhong. Among these, Huashuo is a domestically advanced early-maturing cultivar and is dominant in newly developed orchards. While Jinxiuhong is the first Chinese cultivar introduced by France and has been continuously undergoing regional trials in Europe.
2. Establishment of apple hi-tech breeding system
Established the genetic engineering- and molecular marker-assisted high-tech breeding system. Tremendously improved the current apple breeding situation of long juvenile period and hybridization cycle, enhanced the accuracy and efficiency of directional breeding.
