Research direction:
Our team is responsible for the work of the preservation of peach varieties, which is currently one of the most abundant nurseries in the world. This group is engaged in the screening of excellent peach varieties, new variety improvement, and research on corresponding cultivation techniques.
International Cooperation:
Long-term cooperation relationships have been built between peach germplasm resources team and Institute of Agro-food Research and Technology (IRTA) and Texas A&M University (TAMU) to carry out research on genomic breeding in peach.
Representative Achievements:
1. Research on the investigation, collection and evaluation of peach germplasm resources
Focused on the peach industry, the team mainly performed the research work including investigation, collection and in-depth evaluation of peach germplasm resources, especially for the peaches originated in Tibet and southeast China. Currently, a total of 1,400 peaches were preserved. In addition, the team also finished whole-genome resequencing of more than 1000 accessions and de novo sequencing of peach and its wild related species to built the world's most abundant database of peach germplasm resources in terms of phenotypes and genotypes.
2. Basic research on the discovery of excellent peach genes and their biological regulation mechanism
The team carried out research on peach functional genomics and the construction of an efficient molecular breeding technology platform. The team has identified QTLs for 10 quality traits and five major quantitative traits in peach as well as developed 14 practical markers and constructed a genome-wide selection technology system.
3. Breeding of new peach varieties with high quality, adaptability and characteristics
The team has improved new peach varieties with high quality and adaptability, as well as rootstock with multi-resistance and dwarf. In the past five years, 17 new mid-maturing peach and nectarine were improved, accounting for 70% of the new peach cultivation area in China. Moreover, a total of 13 excellent ornamental peaches with different flowering stages, colors and shapes were also improved and widely planting in production.
