4 Innovation Team of High Value Fruits Genetic Resources and Improvement

Research direction:

1.Germplasm collection, preservation, accurate identification, and innovative utilization in high value fruits.

2.Key gene mining and molecular mechanism analysis of economic traits in high value fruits.

3.High efficiency breeding techniques and new varieties innovation in high value fruits.

International Cooperation:

Long-term cooperation relationships have been built with the United States Department of Agriculture, WAGENINGEN University, Institut Nationale de la Recherche Agronomigue (INRA), Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) to carry out research on cultivar evaluation and hi-tech breeding system development.

Representative Achievements:

1.Cultivation and application of high value fruits

The team has bred new varieties of high-quality, early-maturing, disease-resistant and high-yielding strawberry, new soft-seeded, cold-resistant and high-quality pomegranate varieties, new high-quality, stable-yielding cherry varieties. The team has promoted the localization process of high value fruits in China.

2. Successfully assembled a haplotype-resolved octoploid strawberry genome

The team has successfully assembled a haplotype-resolved octoploid genome for the strawberry. By generating single-base resolution maps of the DNA methylome in immature and ripe strawberry, we provide valuable insights into the epigenetic dynamics in octoploid strawberries.

3. Establishment of strawberry genetic transformation system

The team has established the strawberry genetic transformation and CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing system, obtaining transgenic strawberry seedlings with many elite traits which could be used for rapid breeding.
